About Us

New Tech | School within a school

  1. The coupling of district restructuring and a federal magnet (C.H.I.L.D.) grant launched Everett New Tech High (ENTH) with approximately 200 7th and 8th graders in the fall of 2014. We have a shared campus on the south end of Everett High School. We've expanded to 9th and 10th grades for 2015-16 year. The "New Tech" part of our name reflects both our partnership and re-imagining of our educational approach with the New Tech Network,". . . a nonprofit organization that transforms schools into innovative learning environments." As a magnet school our focus on re-imagining our approach to teaching and learning.
  2. Engage | Empower | Enable

  3. At the heart of our instructional approach is project-based learning or PBL. Students classes are integrated with multiple subjects, for example science and math or English and social studies. We also have a 1:1 student to technology ratio utilizing an online course management system called ECHO. We have developed norms and a school-wide culture around positive relationships and the pillars of trust, respect, and responsibility.
  4. Everett New Tech High is not a one-size-fits-all curriculum designed for one particular type of student. It's designed to meet the needs of all learners through engaging instruction that empowers student with "soft skills" like self-direction, oral communication, time management, and collaboration.
  5. Academics

    1. Everett New Tech High teaches a dynamic rigorous curriculum combining the Michigan Merit Curriculum standards in integrated classes (multi-disciplinary) with a project-based learning approach. Students enroll in the core subjects of Science, Mathematics, English Language Arts and Social Studies. All students integrate technology within their classes with a 1:1 student laptop ratio. At the center of this is our learning management system called ECHO. Enhancement of all learning happens in a common smaller group Tech Ed class which allows for focused time on project work, math skills, and community building. Students also enroll in electives which currently include options in: Band, Spanish, Japanese, Photoshop/Journalism and Health/Physical Education.
    2. Project-based Learning

    3. Projects have always been done in school, but in PBL the project becomes the driving force behind all the learning. At the beginning of each project, students are given a real-world task or problem to solve. Students become responsible for their learning by working in small groups to identify what they need to learn in order to complete the project. They work together to propose a solution which is publicly presented. In PBL, learning is contextual, creative, and shared. Students collaborate on meaningful projects that require critical thinking, creativity, and communication in order for them to answer challenging questions or solve complex problems.
    4. School Wide Learning Outcomes / "Soft Skills"

    5. Built into all projects, in addition to specific subject content, are "learning outcomes". These are five research-based indicators of post-secondary success. They are:
    6. Knowledge & Thinking
    7. The ability to reason, problem-solve, develop sound arguments or decisions, and create new ideas by using appropriate sources and applying the knowledge and skills of a discipline.
    8. Written Communication
    9. The ability to effectively communicate knowledge and thinking through writing by organizing and structuring ideas and using discipline appropriate language and conventions.
    10. Oral Communication
    11. The ability to communicate knowledge and thinking through effective oral presentations.
    12. Collaboration
    13. The ability to be a productive member of diverse teams through strong interpersonal communication, a commitment to shared success, leadership, and initiative.
    14. Agency
    15. Develop Growth Mindset:  I can grow my intelligence and skill through effort, practice and challenge.  The brain grows bigger with use, like a muscle.  Take Ownership Over One's Learning: I can learn how to learn and monitor progress to be successful on tasks, school, and life.
